During the Tokyo game show Joystiq.com were able to try the PSP version of Silent Hill: Shattered Memories and had a nice experience:

TGS 2009: Hands-on: Silent Hill Shattered Memories (PSP)

Much like 2007’s Silent Hill: Origins, the PSP version of Shattered Memories is quite capable of conveying an eerie, unsettling experience, even on a platform that might seem ill-equipped for the survival-horror genre in comparison to home consoles. The Wii re-imagining of Konami’s PS1 classic is faithfully represented on Sony’s portable, with only a few framerate hiccups tarnishing a very impressive visual representation.

Recreating the Wii version’s moody ambiance isn’t the port’s only major success, as it handles the absence of the motion-sensitive remote quite elegantly. Here, you manipulate Harry Mason’s flashlight from a third-person perspective by holding R1 and moving the analog nub. While this removes the ability to move and peer into the terrifying town’s dark recesses at the same time, the game’s generally slow pace makes such multitasking more of a luxury than a necessity.

When the pace is quickened and Harry is forced to flee from Silent Hill’s disgusting meat-faced minions, there’s usually little need to stop and examine the area first. As with the Wii version, the recommended escape route is highlighted on doors and walls by a layer of light-blue ice, helping you navigate to safety and preserving the flow of the nerve-wracking chase sequence. Should an enemy pounce on top of you, however, you have a few seconds to press the indicated face button (buttons if you’re the victim of a monster pile-up) and shake them off.

It remains to be seen how well Shattered Memories shifts between its methodical exploration sequences and frantic chases over the course of the full adventure, but should it live up to the potential displayed in its E3 2009 demo (be sure to read our detailed hands-on impressions), we’ll have no qualms about recommending either the Wii or PSP version come this November.

So it sounds like even without the wii-mote you can expect to get the same experience as playing on the wii 🙂

Daniel Feit from Wired.com Game | Life Hands On- SH:SM Frightens, Frustrates… responds to my questions :)

Posted By: Whitney   September 25th, 2009 | 11:32 pm

Earlier I posted Daniel Feit’s review of the Silent Hill Shattered Memories demo at the Tokyo Game Show. I posted a comment to his article earlier today:

Posted by: Whitney | 09/25/09 | 1:34 pm
I have a couple questions about the demo at the TGS. How long did you play for? Were you able to take the psych profile? Did you wander around Silent Hill looking for clues for your daughter a little bit or were you just attacked by monsters? From your review it just sounds like you just experienced the monster chase bits of the game.

And when I came home I noticed he was nice enough to answer my inquiry 🙂

Posted by: Daniel Feit | 09/25/09 | 6:07 pm

The demo started in the dark, icy town without explanation of what my objectives were. I think I played for eight minutes or so. There was no mention of a “psych profile” unless that was an option somewhere on my phone.

This could just be a bad demo. Maybe there are some psychologically challenging portions that they felt would not “show” very well, so they went with incomprehensible action instead.

It’s too bad he didn’t get the full demo experience others had at e3, I think he would have left with a better impression of the game. Hopefully he’ll give it another shot when the game comes out in November!

Well this is a little disappointing, I was hoping for a cool new trailer but it’s just the trailer shown at Gamescom ’09 with Japanese subtitles. If you would like to check it out for yourself it’s been posted on the Japanese Silent Hill Shattered Memories website and on my youtube page:

Tokyo Game Show (’09) Photos and Reports

Posted By: Whitney   September 24th, 2009 | 11:02 pm

Man I really wish I could go to TGS 🙂 Especially to see the new Silent Hill game. Since I’m not cool enough to attend I have to be satisfied with the second hand reports and photos I find on the internet. So far there hasn’t been a lot but I was able to find a couple foreign articles discussing some of what they saw at the Silent Hill Shattered Memories section of the ekonami booth!

1) It appears that the Silent Hill “swag” at the Konami booth was just a postcard! It looks like it’s the same background used on the Nintendo Power cover with Harry and the monsters missing with the focus on a deserted Silent Hill street, Cheryl’s eyes and the Shattered Memories logo.

2) Konami only had the PSP and Wii versions of the game and they they were set up in a quiet corner of the booth which one con goer from 4Gamer.net thought:

“ そして「SILENT HILL -SHATTERED MEMORIES-」はプレイヤーの恐怖心を煽る暗闇の中,PSP版とWii版の試遊台を各3台用意。ほかのコーナーに比べて妙に静かなのがゲームの雰囲気とマッチしすぎており,その場にいるだけで寒気がした。”

Thanks to Google translate:

“And “SILENT HILL-SHATTERED MEMORIES-” is scared of the dark whip player, and PSP versions of each Wii version of units 3 units available.Which matches the mood of the game too much is strangely quiet compared to the other corner, you’ve got the chills just being there.

Wired.com Game | Life Hands On: Silent Hill: Shattered Memories Frightens, Frustrates

Daniel Feit from Wired.com’s Game Life was able to check out the TGS demo of Silent Hill: Shattered Memories and unfortunately was less then impressed. He thought the game was scary but felt the demo was overall “frustrating beyond belief.” Feit further explained that had no idea what he was supposed to look for during the demo and he had no tips to go on besides to “keep running.” Overall he felt the demo provided no incentive to find out what Silent Hill: Shattered Memories was is all about and if it was just spent “running away from monsters,” he didn’t feel it was an “appealing way to spend [his] time.”

I’m a little sad to hear that Feit didn’t enjoy the demo and found it frustrating. It makes me wonder if they had a shorter demo at the TGS? The reports from E3 were gave the game a lot of praise and people were able to grasp what the game was all about. I wonder if Feit was able to take the pysch questionnaire and walked around the snowy Silent Hill a bit or if he was just dropped in the middle of a monster chase sequence? At least he thought it was scary though! 🙂

Dead Pixels Exclusive: Silent Hill: Shattered Memories Interview Part 1!

Posted By: Whitney   September 23rd, 2009 | 10:01 am

Dead Pixel’s has part one of their two part interview with Tomm Hulett up with some new tidbits of information! To read the full interview go here:

http://www.bloody-disgusting.com/news/videogames/581/

According to Tomm we will get a full Shattered Memories Soundtrack if we pre order the game! Does this mean we can expect a soundtrack like the one included in SH3 or as a bonus like SH4 just with extra re recorded SH tunes from previous games? I hope so, I would really want all the songs from Shattered Memories!

The pysch profile in the game is supposed to alter the game to how you
play…is this just in the beginning of the game or is it throughout the
game? Could you give some examples.

TH – The Psych Profile is constantly evolving the game based on who you are. The game is constantly gathering data from your actions and learning more about you. This effect lasts the entire game. This isn’t something you’ve seen in other games where you can take the good or evil path; the psych profile is based on actual psychological principles, so it can judge how outgoing you are, whether you’re an introvert, etc etc.

For fans of the series, will there be any nods or easter eggs in the
game for loyal players?

TH – Of course, though a lot of them are very subtle. Fans will have to be very observant.

Will there be a completely new score for the games music? Or just the
original?

TH – Akira Yamaoka (who has created the music for every Silent Hill) has created an all new score for Shattered Memories. People who pre-order the game at participating retailers will receive a full Soundtrack CD, in fact.

Will there be a “Making of” Silent Hill: Shattered Memories?

Posted By: Whitney   September 22nd, 2009 | 8:01 pm

Okay this is technically old News from July ’09… but it’s new to me!

I just came across a video showing a clip taken by a fan at Mary McGlynn 2009 Otakon panel (which you can read more about here) where she speaks a little about Silent Hill: Shattered Memories. Along with re recording some old silent hill songs they also filmed some “behind the scenes” stuff as well! I hope this means that there’s a “Making of Silent Hill: Shattered Memories” I wonder if that will be on the bonus soundtrack from Gamestop?

And a bonus! the fan also recorded Mary answering “What’s your favorite Silent Hill song”
