Silent Hill Revelation Trailer Analysis and Screenshots!

Posted By: Whitney   July 29th, 2012 | 1:05 am

Friday was a big day for Silent Hill fans… it was the premiere of the long awaited Silent Hill Revelation 3D trailer!

I’m sure you all have probably watched it by now but if not you can see the full trailer below:

Unfortunately I was busy at work when this trailer was released so I couldn’t really take screens nor could I make this sort of write up earlier. I’m sure I’m terribly late to the party of giving my own thoughts and everyone else has picked apart this trailer by by now! Haha oh well!

With that said, based on what I saw in the trailer I am so excited to see this movie.

Yes, yes… I know the trailer is cheesy. The Silent Hill 2006 trailer definitely conveyed the tone of Silent Hill games better in that regard but even still, I’m giddy about what I saw of Revelation.

Weird, I know…

Despite the 3D gimmick thrown in our faces and the trailer’s horrible use of typography (ugh) I came away with the impression that in the end Revelation will most likely have more in common with Silent Hill 3’s plot than Silent Hill 2006 ever had with the original game. It is this revelation (haha) that has me eagerly anticipating the movie’s release this October.

Here’s my run down of what was shown in the trailer and my impressions on what the scenes could mean.

In the opening scenes we learn Chris (Sean Bean) and Sharon (Adelaide Clemens) Da Silva have been on the run for the last 6 years (side note: the names Harry and Heather Mason are not spoken in this trailer but we do know that they will go by these fake names in the movie). On the run from what? We aren’t told exactly but we do know it has something to do with their past in regards to Silent Hill. What we know for certain from Sharon’s introduction to her new classmates is that they’ve moved 5 times since she was 11. They are on the run from something and right now I’m hoping this is where the cult from the original game will finally make its debut. Harry and Heather in Silent Hill 3 were on the run and in hiding with fake names from crazy cultists and I this will be the case in the movie as well.

It also appears that like her younger self in first movie, Sharon continues to have nightmares about the town, Silent Hill. The town is calling to her once again but this time around its dark Otherworld is able to touch her well beyond the town’s limits. A horrified Sharon experiences the busy hallway of her new school go silent and turn into a dark Otherworld version of its self within a blink of an eye. A patient demon stalks slowly towards her and it’s not until Sharon backs into Vincent (Kit Harington) does the world return to back normal.

Heather has other troubles on her mind besides the sudden world shifting problem. It appears that someone is following her and we finally get a glimpse of Martin Donovan as private detective Douglas Cartland waiting for Sharon outside her school!

A concerned Sharon phones her dad who tells her to hurry home just as he spots a shadow under the front door and that someone is trying to force open by turning the knob. Chris tells Sharon to hurry home and attempts to leave the residence through a back door but is confronted with someone…or something outside as he opens the door.

Vincent walks a grateful Sharon home who discovers that her father is missing. The only clue regarding his disappearance is a cryptic (and oh soooo cheesy looking…) “Come to Silent Hill” with a Halo of the Sun painted in black..(maybe blood?) on a wall. Sharon recognizes the symbol used within the message and grabs a wooden box from a closet with the same seal engraved on the lid. Inside we see there are pieces of paper that look like they say “For Sharon” as well as a metal Seal of Metatron wrapped in cloth that Sharon shows to Vincent.

The trailer jumps forward and we see Vincent and Sharon have made it to Silent Hill. They look on in horror as Jack’s Inn (a location seen in both Silent Hill 2 and 3) peels and rusts around them around them. Vincent is suddenly attack from behind by a creature we’ve never seen before leaving Sharon to explore the foggy town by herself.

Side note: I thought it was pretty awesome that Sharon has room 106 at Jack’s Inn since it’s the same room number Heather and Douglas stayed in during Silent Hill 3

Sharon walks by a “Welcome to Silent Hill” sign similar to the one Rose passed in the first movie. Men in black watch Sharon from the windows above a she travels down what I assume is Nathan Ave. These guys could be members of the cult who may have kept Sharon and her father on the run (if this follows the cult plot of Silent Hill 3)…or just leftovers from Christabella’s congregation in the first movie. At this point we have no way of knowing either way but if they are from Christabella’s congregation I wonder how the heck they survived the massacre in the first movie!

Sharon runs into a familiar face from the first movie, Dahlia Gillespie (Deborah Kara Unger), whom she asks the whereabouts of her father. Before Dahlia can answer however darkness closes in around them and air raid sirens go off as the Otherworld is about to take over once again. Dahlia tells Sharon to get inside (the nearby church maybe?) for safety but Heather runs off instead with the darkness on her nipping at her heels.

Side note here: Several of my friends have pointed out how nice Dahlia looks in the movie and I have to agree. She definitely looks less like a garbage lady now. Could it be she’s no longer a pariah? Does her new finery somehow indict she may now hold a position of power within the community? I look forward to finding out!

It also appears that Sharon and Dahlia are talking near a burning stake. I remember when the set photos taken in March of 2011 were popping up on the internet there were burned corpses still strung up on some of them…I guess all these are set up right outside the church then? Makes sense if the church in Silent Hill continues to burn non believers like they did in the first movie.

The trailer shifts scenes again and we get a glimpse of the clip only those who made it into the Comic Con Revelation panel saw! We see a body wrapped in webbing and a mannequin type monster chase after Sharon and a female which look like the mysterious Suki named and first revealed in Don Carmody’s own set photos!

From what I can see of the monster it looks similar to Scarlett from Silent Hill Homecoming: both are large, move like spiders and are made of doll type materials. But unlike Scarlett, who is just an enlarged porcelain doll, this new monster is made from a mishmash of limbs and heads of several store mannequins. I wonder if this scene has any connection to the filming of the styrofoam head that fell off a shelf over and over again mentioned in an interview Don Camody? I still have my fingers crossed that the scene mentioned in that interview may still be a homage to the infamous decapitating mannequin scare in Silent Hill 3.

The scene changes again to Sharon holding a golden glowing seal of Metatron. She says the seal is a key and asks a very human looking Leonard Wolf (Malcolm McDowell) what it unlocks. Leonard replies that it unlocks the “true nature of things.” I am left wondering if we will see his monster form in this movie.

We see a variety of quick shots at this point:

-Sharon running into Lakeside Amusement park

-Dark Alessa walking through Silent Hill and destroying everything in her path

-Lots of arms reaching out of prison cells with Pyramid Head swinging a giant axe down to maybe strike Sharon who we saw moments before on the floor.

The trailer cuts back to Dahlia on the streets of Silent Hill telling Sharon she was “chosen to destroy the demon” (actually this might be a trailer editing trick as it doesn’t look like Dahlia is actually speaking this line and it was dubbed over. Maybe it’s really a line by Claudia?) and it cuts to an amusing shot of Pyramid Head turning the gears to run the carousel at Lakeside. I can just imagine that he only took that job because times are tough with the economic crisis and all. I bet he was laid off from his stalking and punishment gig and had to take any job he could get! (Haha)

Is he the demon Dahlia is referring to? I don’t think so. I’m pretty sure she’s referring to Dark Alessa that we saw in scenes prior reeking havoc on the foggy streets of Silent Hill.

Next Vincent and Sharon duck behind a booth in Lakeside Amusement Park to avoid detection from a group of cloaked and masked people. With all those buckles it look like these guys got Square Enix character designer,Tetsuya Nomura, to design their robes! 😉

I kid, I kid but there is something pretty amazing that’s really easy to miss in this scene unless you are looking at this trailer frame by frame.

When Vincent and Sharon duck down you can see clearly behind them a large bloody mouthed ROBBIE THE RABBIT MASCOT lying prone behind them! So it appears that not only will we see him as a stuffed doll prize hanging in the booths but as an actual mascot as well (even if it’s just lying prone the background).

(At least I think it is a mascot…it could just be a really big stuffed prize…)

so…yes ROBBIE THE RABBIT MASCOT FROM SILENT HILL 3 IS IN THE MOVIE!!!!!!!!

Above is a pretty accurate rendition of how I reacted when I noticed the Robbie Mascot

There are more quick flashes of other scenes: Christopher alive and chained to a large statue of Valtiel and calling out to Sharon.

– Vincent wheeled into a hospital by two men (I think miner garb we saw in the first movie and seen in this Revelation set picture) to room full of Bubblehead nurses that was saw in the Comic Con nurses attack clip.

– A spinning carousel surrounded by both a ring of fire and people (the cult? Maybe a bunch of hooded guys with all the buckles?).

– Sharon aiming a gun to shoot. (HELL YES!)

– A chained Leonard Wolf falling/flying backwards away from Sharon.

– A close up of Dark Alessa on the burning carousel with Sharon screaming at her to “GO TO HELL!”

– Claudia Wolf (Carrie Anne Moss) and Sharon both touching the Seal of Metatron with a chained Chris behind them. While grasping the seal Claudia’s white dress peels away to reveal a black dress underneath (just like her character design in Silent Hill 3. The key is most likely showing her true form to Sharon.

-Vincent and Sharon running down a corridor.

– Close up of Sharon on the burning carousel.

– A man reaches out through the prison bars and chokes Sharon.

– A scared Sharon crab walks backwards on the burning carousel.

– Pyramid Head wields his knife and then BAM the movie logo!

So that’s the trailer!

I was so excited to see locations, items and what appeared to be plot points from Silent Hill 3 that I was able to look past the cheesy in your face “Hey the movie is in 3D ya’ll!” (Did I mention it is in 3D! 3D! 3D?!) quality I know made other fans really disappointed.

But I look at it like this: Michael J Bassett did not cut this trailer and stated he was only peripherally involved in the trailer making process. The movie probably looks more like a PG-13 teen horror because of the limitation on what they could and could not show in a green-band trailer.

“I understood that we couldn’t show anything very strong here because the trailer is supposed to be for all audiences but they’re really cautious even with the most (in my opinion) inoffensive imagery. Anything aggressive, threatening, scary or just plain freaky is looked at very closely and the poor folks at Open Road have to negotiate for every moment.” – Michael J Bassett

Bassett said at Comic Con that this movie was a hard R I’m pretty sure this means there will be plenty of scares we can look forward to they just couldn’t show to a general audience. Don’t forget Open Roads also has to get the general public interested in this film. Bassett even said on his blog there were elements he was surprised test better with a general audience:

“What’s been really educational is how the trailer is tested and refined to focus on engaging audiences who really don’t know much about Silent Hill at all. Things that I thought worked fine, didn’t go down too well and elements I didn’t much care for really helped overall understanding or engagement. It’s maybe not the way I’d do it but I’m fascinated by this part of the process.” – Michael J Bassett

So I’m thinking all the action shots were in there because “boring” and moody atmosphere shots of the town probably didn’t go over so well.

With all that said I do have some concerns of my own regarding the movie. For one thing there’s no mention or even a hint in the trailer that Sharon/Heather has a god fetus inside her. I’m thinking now that this plot point of Silent Hill 3 was most likely scrapped… Unless they plan on it being a surprise when we watch the movie. This has made worried because the god fetus inside Heather was a big focus and motivation for Claudia within the game. What’s Claudia’s motivation now that there’s no god to birth? Is she working with Dark Alessa?

Also I’m not sure if it’s just me but a lot of thee cgi effects seemed pretty obvious to me…like I could tell when Sharon was walking past a green screen and not a real location. It just didn’t seem as polished as say Harry Potter or Dark Knight Rises? You know I probably shouldn’t nitpick on this sort of thing, I really don’t know what I’m talking about XD Besides it’s not like it looks like Birdemic or anything.

So What did you guys think of the trailer? Let me know in the comments!

I LOVE your analysis of the trailer!!! BANG ON! I think you are correct about the “Come to Silent Hill” sign… I think in the film it will be blood – but because this trailer had to be PG-13 it was changed to black (which is why it looks so off…)
Also, do you think it is really Dahlia saying “You were chosen to destroy the demon”? If you watch the clip the words do not match her mouth movement, and in my opinion it doesn’t sound at all like Dahlia… I think maybe it’s Claudia saying it but they didn’t want (for some reason) to show her saying these words.

The “greenscreen” moments you mentioned are not greenscreen. This is caused by the fact that the fog is CGI. They couldn’t have a fog machine since the movie was shot in actual exteriors. The movie had hlf the budget of the original so they could not really build huge church/road sets like they did in the first one. If you rewatch the first movie you will notice it has quite a bit of scenes like this too, these are the scenes that were shot outside and the fig was added in later.

You cannot really compare this to the CGI in HP or DK since those movies are AAA mainstream 100+ million cash machines.

SH fans and brothers should be in touch! 🙂
I am very interested to see this whole film, scared really!
hehe but I am an optimist – the games, will always be the real movie 😉 downpour was a great chapter in the Sh legacy and storyline!

    Keep in touch brothers!

    This was really good!
I’m worried about Claudia, too. Do you think we wil get to see her before Heather enters the sanctuary? Like in the game? Carrie is a big actress, so, i’m kinda worried about her showing very often :(.

Do you think she is revealing a black dress, or transforming?
Well, thank you for this Great analysis, and for those Great Pictures!!! 😀

  5. Whitney says:

Thanks for you compliments and comments guys!

@Hoody – you might be right I just rewatched the trailer and have edited my analysis to point out this possibility 🙂

@Survival – Ah yes that makes more sense! I wasn’t sure how to describe it. It was really only distracting in the scenes with Heather walking in the foggy streets! As for comparing I know it was a nitpick that’s why I told myself in the write up not to harp on it and that I didn’t know what I was talking about hehe 😉

@Alice – I’m hoping we do and yes I do believe the seal is revealing her black dress 🙂

i enjoyed your analysis, whitney! i really like the trailer, of course i hope the movie isn’t so action-oriented, but i’m really enjoying all the “easter eggs” or whatever, really all the stuff from the game is so awesome!

i’ll be really disappointed though, if the god fetus and all of that isn’t in there, and it’s all about like “destroying” demon dark alessa. really disappointed, actually. like, that’s what so scary about the game, being pregnant with god is like the most freakish thing ever, and like if claudia would eat in the movie would have been so insanely awesome. but right now, i doubt it..

BUT BESIDES that plot point not looking like it’s being involved.. I REALLY LIKED IT. like it would’ve been cool if heather was feeling the fetus and that’s what turned the school for that second and just ksjgfksdjfdf.

I am glad someone has done this at last, I have watched the trailer several times over already to ensure I missed nothing, but being able to look at all those stills is really nice!

While the “You were chosen to destroy the demon” sounds like something Claudia would say, after comparing the voice to other work of Carrie Ann Moss’s I actually don’t think it is hers.

Two things I found interesting, one I think they have recast Dark Alessa after comparing her to Jodelle.

Two, when what seems to be the carousel lights up in flame on the birds eye shot I think there are lots of people surrounding it. They look like they are grovelling.

I thought that the fog effect was noticably CGI which is a slight let-down, but on the plus side it seems to me that the fog in this movie is going to be more like the smoke of the games than realistic fog. Whether this will look good overall I am not sure.

I really cannot wait for this movie. I am quite sure that this is going to be an extremely faithful adaptation of the third game. It is the small references and nods that help it become such.

I just hope to, and excuse the pun, god that they include closers in at least one scene! They were the iconic Silent Hill 3 monster if you ask me, as perhaps the grey children were of the first game.

My only concern so far is the brightness of everything and the actual otherworld. I am not seeing very much “Disturbing” grating as I am the stuff that appeared in homecoming. There seems to be a lot of fire in the other-world too. =(

As a side note, I got vibes from Silent Hill 3, 4 and origins from the trailer. I felt specifically that the spider-monster scene had the gloomy glow of the Silent Hill 4 shopping mall, and the wall-peeling effect (Which I think looked much better and higher quality than the effect of the first movie) inside Jack’s Inn reminded me heavily of the ghosts coming through the walls in the forth game too.

I am interested in whether the international trailer that is coming out in a few weeks will be more atmospheric and less action-based, as even though the content is exciting I do not think it matches the quality of the first movie’s trailer.

  8. Silent Evil says:

Love the white dress on Claudia! Correct me if I’m wrong but I’m sure that look was taken from one of the original concept designs for Claudia by Team Silent.

BTW, has the movie studio released a total running time for the film, yet? I’m hoping it’ll be at least 120 min like the first film.

  9. Alice says:

@Silent Evil: The white dress looks incredibly similar to one of her earlier concept art (let’s be happy about that they chose that one and not the bald, naked and full of tatoos Claudia :O)
I also love her new look! but i’m now much more happier than ever, knowing that her black dress is still there!…may be her transformation, as accidentaly said by Adelaide in one interview, but, i hope it’s her black dress 😉
As for the running time, i would also like to know :/ does anyone knows this?

  10. Alice says:

LOL, i’m really late to this, and i mean REALLY late, but well:
    Funny story Whitney!
Remember your Podcast #14? You started to say that you were excited because Bassett confirmed that Claudia didn’t have any eyebrows, so, you started searching in his blog for his confirmation. When you found it, you read the “she ain’t fat, and i can guarantee you, she doesn´t have eyebrows” comment, and then you started to look for who called her Fat.
Surprise! Im Alice! The one that commented that! 😀
So, now i want to say: Sorry! lol. I didn’t know how to write that very well at that moment, what i wanted to say was that her Costume was the one that looked “bad”, very large (and i wasn’t the only one thinking it, neither :D), not her. I didn’t confuse her jacket as her whole body. I was just very excited to see those images (as you said, in your page! :D), and i think that everyone that have read my comments here know that i LOVE Claudia, so, i wanted to ask Michael about her whole costume, that’s why i asked him about her jacket (i know! it sounded like i was saying she was the fat one, but i didn’t know how to say…it at the moment), sleeves, and even skirt (which also sounded bad for my part, because i said they looked like pants…”lol”).
So, there’s my little story! 🙂

  11. Jess says:

I can’t wait for this, I’m going with my best mates to see it x3

  12. Cyrus says:

    A GREAT analysis….

At first I dismissed the trailer as hokey. Then, I watched it again and slowed it down, noticed these screencaps, and became very curious. Like the style of the cultists is very interesting in their pointed hoods. Pyramid Head operating a carousel, which is a very “Silent Hill” sight to behold.

I’ve been worried about Basset’s ability to pull this off. Despite the flaws in the first film, it captured an otherworldly feel that was very haunting and stayed with me, even though it didn’t have much to do with the lore from the game. I’m hoping the new writer / director will at least come close to achieving the same surrealist-horror-faery-tale style that created the iconic atmospheres of not only the games, but the original movie.

  13. Whitney says:

Thanks! I’m hoping this film will be able to convey the aesthetics of the first film as well…it was really the best part of the first film in my opinion!

  14. Nathan says:

Can not wait for this movie! I’ve been a huge fan since the first game was released! Wondering if anyone else noticed the wheel chair at 1:32 in the trailer? Another one of those little details that looks to be incorporated into the film thankfully. I’m guessing that there will be more subtle nuances like this one and the Robbie mascot making a debut 🙂 Any other avid fan “nuances” noticed out there? On the down side here, I can’t say that I’m happy about seeing Pyramid Head making such a large appearance or winding some kind of crank…this seems a bit campy and uncharacteristic of the “Red Pyramid Thing”…hopefully this just an advertising ploy though for the trailer, I would hate to see this video game icon used in such a menial way. Oh well, just an internet opinion. Thanks for reading!

  15. ajdisbeast says:

the movie was…..BEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAST!!! i mean it WAS a total disgrace to the games but i just loved how they did all that stuff! i love silent hill!
