Australian PlayStation Magazine Downpour Review (7/10)
Posted By: Whitney February 21st, 2012 | 10:36 pmHell Descent forum member Mr. Price was surprised to find that his new issue of Australian PlayStation Magazine contained a Downpour review.
Unfortunately the review isn’t very in-depth as there’s no talk about the new music but it does describe the game combat, PS3 load times, atmosphere and touches on the morality choices of the game briefly.
The magazine gives the game an just an average rating of 7/10 citing that Downpour “Shines where it ought to, but much too soggy around the edges.”
It’s not the best score but I still have high hopes for Downpour as I really enjoyed what I played so far. Here’s hoping some more reviews will roll in soon!

Most of my favourite games have either not reviewed or sold well. Remember “things can only get better”.
Tbh,I’m kinda encouraged by the review, regardless of the scant detail and lukewarm response to the game. Several key factors such as the atmospheric nature of the earlier games have obviously been recaptured and combat has had a much needed overhaul too. I feel a lot of the general purpose of the game has been lost on the reviewer who seems to have merely skipped his way through the title without truly acknowledging all that it has to offer.
Such a quick and detail-lite review can’t really be taken seriously in my opinion. I’m not saying they’re wrong because, of course, I haven’t played it yet. I’m just saying that the review doesn’t seem all that reliable due to the lack of details.
The worst thing is that there are probably some fans out there who are pleased about this score because they’ll be feeling it vindicates their pre-emptive dismissal of this game as another flop.
I however, am still very much looking forwards to it.
Still a month or so before the game is released and they’ve already made a review of it. Plus, there’s little to no detail. Something’s fishy going on here. Either they pirated it or made a false review, but either way, I’m not taking it seriously.
I’m with you guys, this wasn’t a very well written review in my opinion. I’m not too worried given that fact that all the Silent Hill games, even Silent Hill 2, didn’t get that great review scores.
I thought it was a little funny he described things that make a good Silent Hill game as a negative. Since when is being forced to run a bad thing?
@Ben I already saw a couple of those fans on tumblr after Silent Haven posted this review last night. Stating they weren’t going to get the game anyway but this review proves just how terrible Downpour is.
@Alex – They didn’t pirate it, review copies have been sent out. The new 5 min video preview I posted a couple days ago was from another person who got a review code from Konami and they been talking a bit about the game over on Neogaf.
Not to discredit the reviewer, but he forgot to go into detail about what makes a Silent Hill game a Silent Hill game; the story. Most people think the game series peaked at SH2, and SH2 had clunky controls and sometimes tedious gameplay. What got the attention of the fans was how in-depth and well written the story was. It was tragic and shocking and all around interesting.
As long as this game features a unique, twisted story and developed characters, it’ll be a win in my book.
The part about being forced to run being a bad thing made me raise an eyebrow. Being forced to fight was something that fans hated about Homecoming. He also doesn’t bring up the story, characters, puzzles, boss fights, and change in music. The only thing that made me nervous about the game was the possibility of the weapons being too fragile and scattered too far apart. Everything else about this review felt half assed.
On the side, does it actually say “Play this if you like […] fricken useless maps”?
I also like how if you like “freakshows” this game is for you, also. Freakshows, freakin’ out, fricken useless maps. The perfect tri”F”ecta. I crack myself up.
We’ll see the other reviews!!! I’ll play downpour no matter what after all I pre-ordered it. Hopefully if it’s true what this review says it may be fixed (so I hope)…
What I am really anticipating is some expressive camera angles which should make the game feel as immersive as Silent Hill 1-4(given the storyline is succesful too). The original SH1-4 all had this feature, where the camera angles constantly changed angles, giving the player beatiful vistas/panoramas of the ingame contents but still where always controllable to some extend, sometimes being claustrophobic/uneasy to control or/and placed in obscure angles in order to disturb the players nerves, and also I think it gave the character focus more presentation. Cheers to everyone anyway. 😉 GG.
