An altogether slick experience from beginning to end. The original license reborn into something new. Seems tailor made for Wii, from the superb flashlight to audio cues out of the Wii remote.
9.0 Graphics
The claustrophobic world comes to life in great detail. Huge, seamless world. Realistic characters with fluid animation. Amazing lighting and particle systems. Some occasional framerate hiccups.
8.5 Sound
A moody, dynamic soundtrack by composer Akira Yamaoka complements strong voice acting, spooky sound effects and audio cues tied to the Wii remote’s speaker.
8.5 Gameplay
Tight controls and clever puzzles are separated by truly terrifying chase sequences and lots of different gameplay variations, some of which involve fun gestures. The flashlight alone is entertaining.
6.5 Lasting Appeal
Really fun while it lasts, but the experience is short — about five or six hours. You can come back and play again with very different results (and even a new ending), though.
Nice. Everything looks good. A plus to voice acting too. It must be a real improvement. The sound’s good I guess. 😉 Except that “The experience is short”. 😮 The whole game lasts 5-6 hours?? Lulz. I mean you can play again to see different profiles and endings but hey… 😀 I think that maybe it’s that short ’cause of that? But it’s still short anyway… Also, I can’t know yet about that detail thingy. From what I’ve seen the detail in objects is good but it lacks some ….decoration. 😛 But looks very good overall.
I don’t find the length to be that surprising..I mean none of the other games were that long 8 hours at most? I think we will get our money worth from all the replays 🙂
No way! I just started playing last night. Besides I had to work today and could only pick it up again later this evening.
I’m finally getting the hang of the controls thanks to the tips left by commentors (thanks Plaguedguy and Sarah). So I’ve definitely made more progress and I’m moving much faster than I was last night. I’m still dying a lot in the nighmare world beause I get lost and the monster eventually wear me down. I haven’t gotten the hang of using the wayward point on my phone so I’m kinda just RUNNING RUNNING RUNNING oh that’s new! *die* repeat.
BTW those blue outlines definitely do not lead you to “safety” like a lot of fans assumed. The last nightmare sequence I went through I ended up going in a big fat circle! Harry kept getting turned around and I found myself back at the start a couple times!
I’m also taking my time trying to find all the mementos and echoes too. I don’t have the guide or anything so that’s going a bit slow since I’m trying to look in every nook and cranny. I doubt I would beat it this weekend either….but who knows?
It’s good that you’re getting usd to it. 🙂 As for the nightmare sequences – yeah, I thought it would be like that… 🙁 But on the other hand, Hulett had said that the blue outlines are there to show you where you can go and not where you should/have to go. So, I guess it’s not that much “running from point A to point B” – I mean it is but making circles and trying to find your way and not just trying to outrun the monsters in a straight line is better for the sequences’ tension and somewhat variety. But you say the phone offers some tips on where to go? I didn’t get that. 😐 And the mementos and stuff must be a pain or you may miss some without a guide. No special hints as to where they might be.
And if I kept dying I’d be godlike angry… I like your patience. xD Anything that caught your eye particularly? You think it’s progressing good generally? Anyway, good luckz. 🙂
Also, it looks like there are many wide open/big places? Have you felt that? Also, the fact that you get used to it eventually and you feel like you know what to do and it gets repetitive/whatever? But, I guess you’ll knowhat later. 😐 Ofc, reviews analyse in a bit greater technical depth and these might not be that obvious when you play… [except the door lag which is obvious in the videos :P)
W/e.
It’d be hard to use the phone’s map while you’re running, honestly… I’d kind of suggest that you just keep running through the doors until you find the place. That’s how I made it through the first nightmare -_-;;;

Whitney, did you beat it already?

Actually, you cannot run and use the cellular phone concurrently.
I am 3 hours into the game. I expect to have a full review by Tuesday evening.
Man, this sucks not being able to play it early.
