Shattered Memories ‘most important’ Silent Hill release to date

Publisher preparing to revitalise long-running survival horror series with innovative upcoming Wii release

Konami has described its upcoming title Silent Hill: Shattered Memories as a landmark entry in the survival horror series.

The game is due for release on Wii, PS2 and PSP on February 5th, making it the publisher’s first major release of 2010.

Early reviews for Shattered Memories have been very positive, supporting Konami’s claims that this will continue the success of the long-running horror series.

Product manager Martine Saunders told MCV: “The Silent Hill series is one of Konami’s many jewels in its crown, and Shattered Memories is by far the most important advance in the series to date.

“Silent Hill is a strong series with excellent recognition. The review scores from the US version are universally high, and the groundswell of opinion from UK press has also been unanimously positive.”

Konami is putting its full marketing weight behind Shattered Memories, hoping that the expected positive reviews will raise awareness of the game’s arrival in the same way the US press did.

The publisher is preparing a strong in-store presence for the game and is in discussions with its movie partners about potential horror tie-ins.

Shattered Memories is based largely on the original Silent Hill but Saunders is keen to stress that the game is much more than a simple port, thanks to some interesting new features added by UK developer Climax.

“The key to the game is that it changes constantly,” she explained. “While the game shares certain plot similarities with the original PSone title, Shattered Memories is an incredible new take on it.

“The game is constantly monitoring the way the user plays the game and responds to situations, and duly adapts to their decisions.

“This ‘psyche profiling’ means that characters and situations will differ depending on how the user reacts.

“Two different people playing the game will not experience the same reactions as each other, while other smaller differences will play out as the title continues.”

Hi guys sorry for the long wait for updates been a little busy at the moment with work (gearing up for CES 2010). I hope to make many updates very soon. I’m hoping Santa will bring me some sort of capturing device for recording things from my wii so I can take screens and videos…heh if not I can always ask for something like that for my birthday which is less than two weeks later!

At the moment I’m writing up guides on the quickest path to get through each nightmare sequence. I’ve written very guides for the first two and when I finish the rest I plan to polish them up and post them here!

Developers Address Wii Development Hurdles
by Jeff Mattas Dec 11, 2009 9:00pm CST tags: Nintendo, survey
Industry magazine Develop recently surveyed a number of game developers for their thoughts about making games for the Nintendo Wii. Developers were asked if they have been able to take advantage of the Wii’s potential given its global leadership in the home console environment. Their responses, while not entirely surprising, clearly illustrate some common concerns.

One of the chief issues cited by those surveyed was that when a 3rd-party introduces a new IP on the Wii, they do so from a commercially tenuous proposition. According to an anonymous studio head of a “leading international developer,” the ease of Wii development compared to other consoles is partly at fault in that “it has become too easy to flood the market with under-developed product(s) which have the potential to confuse and disappoint the public.” Ed Daly, General Manager of Zoe Mode, further supported the view that oversaturation makes bigger developers wary stating that, “fear that over-supply and fatigue from the mainstream Wii adopters is holding back some publishers and suppressing dev budgets.”

Gary Penn, Creative Director of Denki Ltd., reveals his “love-hate relationship with Nintendo. He states that he “hates most of what’s done with the Wii,” explaining that he rarely bothers with titles on the console that aren’t first-party offerings. That said, he also admits that he has “infinitely more fun” playing the Wii with his kids than any other console.

Zoonami CEO Martin Hollis cites “humility” as one of the key requirements for Wii development, stating that, “…you will be making games for people who are unlike yourself. Therefore you will need to place their wishes above yours.”

Climax Studios CEO Simon Gardner also weighs in regarding his studio’s recent “hardcore” Wii title, Silent Hill Shattered Memories. He believes the actual game development process for Wii is “fine,” but admits that it’s still unclear whether or not hardcore games can be successful on the Wii. “I think it’s yet to be proven,” he stated. “I think a lot of people have bought Wii’s, but many aren’t buying software for it.”

That matches up with our earlier report on the Metacritic data for the year. 362 games came out this year for the Wii but only about a fourth of those games were assessed as positively-reviewed by Metacritic. Yet despite developer concerns, Wii’s continue to sell like proverbial hotcakes.
