Interesting Troy Baker Interview Fuels the Fire on the New HD Collection Voice Cast Controversy

Posted By: Whitney   August 24th, 2011 | 2:06 pm

Yesterday The Gaming Liberty posted an exclusive indepth interview with Troy Baker who has been given the role as James Sunderland’s voice for the upcoming Silent Hill HD Collection. The interview ranged from his past work as Vincent Brooks in Catherine, his future roles in both Arkham City as Two-Face and his lead role in Bioshock: Infinite but the big buzz from the Silent Hill fan base is his response to the controversy surrounding the new voice talent.

TGL: So Troy, I have to ask you about Silent Hill 2 HD because it emerged a couple of days ago that you are taking over from Mr. Guy Cihi as the voice of leading character James Sunderland. The new voices and the decision to re-voice the original characters have ignited a lot of controversy among fans of the original game. Tell us a little about how you first got involved in the new HD version and what do you make of the controversy that surrounds the re-voicing of the characters?

TB: Well, we found out last year that Konami were going to be doing this HD release and we weren’t sure exactly how it would go down or if Konami was simply going to an HD treatment of the game or redo the voices. It was all in deliberation for a time. Then it just emerged really quickly that they were going to recast and use new voices and we didn’t really know why. They just decided that they were going to do this. So we didn’t know if they wanted us to just voice match or if they wanted us to do something different. For the tenth year anniversary, they wanted to do something different that was new. They told us that obviously they don’t want to change the story or the gameplay or anything else but that they just kind of want to give it a fresh face.

Troy then goes on to explain his view on the involvement with Guy Cihi

But the fact that he’s talking about residuals being in videogames shows you just how out of the loop he is because residuals don’t happen. They don’t exist. Don’t think for a second that I don’t wish that I had a fraction of a penny for every unit sold of Call of Duty: Black Ops or Modern Warfare 2 or Modern Warfare 3 that we’re finishing up right now. I would love to see that. But that’s not how the system works right now. So it’s not that Konami wasn’t willing to pay them, he (Guy) wanted residuals, he wanted non-existent money that he felt that he was owed. So Konami has no fault in this whatsoever. And they wanted to use him again. Guy was the one who was outspoken about it and said that unless this happens he wouldn’t do it, so he forced Konami’s hands. So if anybody wants to blame anybody for why they chose new voices, they can go back to the original James and he’s the one to blame.

It would seem according to Troy Baker that Konami planned to have a new voice cast for the HD Collection to give the game a face lift for the 10th anniversary. They reached out to Guy Cihi to reprise his role but Guy felt he was owed residuals for his past work and said that unless that happened he wouldn’t do it. Unfortunately, “residuals don’t happen” in the game industry apparently so Konami had to find another person to play James.

As a big fan I find this really sad because having Guy back to reprise his role in the game would have made the collection that much cooler but at least there was an attempt on Konami’s part right?

Well today, Guy posted a response to the article and the ongoing debate over on his facebook wall.

The problem with Konami is that there were never any agreements for reuses of my performance. In fact… there aren’t any written agreements at all. It was an oversight on Konami’s part. Once Sony picked up the theatrical rights for the SH2 title, I guess Konami figured it would spark interest for a yet another re-release. So after many years of no contact, Konami asks me to sign a back-dated release. I said that I was open to discussing reuses of my performance. I never heard back from them. Instead of talking to me, Konami decided to create new voice tracks.

Well now this leaves me even more confused! So there wasn’t any sort of contract or written agreement years ago about residuals but when Konami approached him 10 years later they wanted him to sign a “backdated release” (what is that? Something that says he wouldn’t get any past or future residuals?) and after he refused James was then recast?

Ugh, this isn’t making sense. I really hope something is worked out between Guy and Konami as an an option on the collection to switch between new and the old voice work would make my day. There still is no official response from Konami about this whole thing but I’ll keep my eyes and ears open for new any developments!

New Silent Hill 2 HD Collection Screens from Gamescom

Posted By: Whitney   August 19th, 2011 | 2:39 pm

Konami has also released a whole slew of new screens of Silent Hill 2 from the HD collection! I’m still waiting for them to appear on their media download site but some other sites on the web have been lucky to get their hand on them early!

We see a lot of shots of Bubblehead nurses that have many going “WHERE THE FUCK ARE THOSE MOUTHS FROM?” lol. Those these are actually not something Konami has just added in for shits and giggles. If you take a look at the original game models extracted from the PC version of Silent Hill 2 you can clearly see the weird red mouths on the model. Not sure why it’s not existent in the PS2 version but it’s something that’s supposed to be there apparently? I don’t know. Can anyone with the PC version see these mouths?

More exciting Downpour and Book of Memories Videos and Info from Gamescom

Posted By: Whitney   August 19th, 2011 | 1:55 pm

Sorry for the delay on this news you guys I was super busy at work all day yesterday and I am just now getting all caught up on all the new Silent Hill stuff!

Silent Hill Book of Memories Gameplay Footage

Okay it was nice to see some of those screens in action, a closer look at the character concept art and to hear more about the game’s premise. I think the story is actually pretty interesting so far: You recieve a book that contains you entire life story within the pages – your memories (hey I think I know where they got the title lol…), future maybe? Anyway the book is all about you and if you alter the text you can change reality and your own history and you will have to deal with the ramifications. Sounds pretty interesting to me! We also learned that there will be creatures from Silent Hill’s past titles, along with limited resources, creepy atmosphere and scare rooms.

From watching the footage it seems like there’s some RPG elements there as the guy in the orange cap seemed to perform some sort of magical attack. I’ll be honest here I raised an eyebrow I didn’t expect to see something like that in a Silent Hill game. Now I’m wondering how it will tie in with the rest of the normal melee and fire arsonal (shotgun, knife, cleaver, fists, pipes, etc). Will everyone have this sort of power or only certain character types?

Overall I can’t say I’m that excited for this title as it seems a big departure in terms of game play from the rest of the series. That’s not to say it doesn’t look like it could be fun, I would still love to try it but I see it so far as being in the same category as the Silent Hill Playnovel, those Silent Hill Cellphone games and the arcade game. What do you guys think?

Silent Hill Downpour Sneak Peek

This game seems to get better and better every time I see new footage which has me super hyped for it’s release later this year. The music in the brief little sneak peek was nice and I have to say I have a lot more questions about Murphy’s character…seems like he’s not popular with the guards or the other inmates. I wonder what he did…

Also what’s with all the rape faces given to Murphy lol?

What you you guys think?

Silent Hill: Book of Memories is a Top-Down Multiplayer Game, say whaaat?

Posted By: Whitney   August 17th, 2011 | 1:06 pm

We have a gained a bit more information and screens on the upcoming Book of Memories the Silent Hill Vita multiplayer game being developed by WayForward during the Konami Gamescom 2011 Press Conference!

The game will have a top-down or isometric perspective, which is typically seen in role playing games but that’s not to say this hasn’t been used in a horror genre before! This view was also used in, Sweet Home, a Capcom Japan-only survival horror RPG Nintendo back in 1989. Despite the RPG like view the game still give people chills and was even later given credit as an inspiration for Capcom’s blockbuster Resident Evil!

Back during E3 2011 we learned that Book of Memories would be it’s own story unrelated to past Silent Hill titles, this probably because the game will give you the option to create your own protagonist. The video during the press conference showed three custom characters with the names Harry, Maria and James 🙂

From the screens it looks like we can make characters look a bit like Travis from Silent Hill Origins (it’s the hat that made me think that), Murphy from Downpour (green jumpsuit) and on the other end of the spectrum some sort of gothic chick. Additionally these screens also give us a peek at some of the enemies, nurses make a comeback and is that a Needler from Homecoming I see? Oh yeah, Pyramid Head going be in this too…ugh…but hey at least he’s not in Downpour!

According to Joystiq, Book of Memories will feature melee combat, guns and “what appears to be a smattering of RPG elements.” I’ll let you know if I find out any new information!

Konami’s Gamescom 2011 Video! Hear the New Silent Hill 2 Voices!

Posted By: Whitney   August 17th, 2011 | 10:52 am

Gamescom 2011 is just full of a bunch of new Silent Hill goodies including a sneak peek at some of the new voice work for Silent Hill 2.

What do you guys think? Maria definitely sounds more sultry in my opinion (though her original voice is still awesome!), I think James had more emotion in his voice with the new voice actor…though I’m not too sure of Eddie he didn’t sound off kilter enough (he sounded like he was high lol). Overall the voices didn’t sound like they were mixed in yet with bg music (it’s a preview afterall) but I do like that they tried to keep the same inflections and what not from the originals and they do seem better acted to me…still it will be hard to beat the originals since it’s what we all come to know and love! Voice acting aside I think just being able to play this on XBOX 360 makes this collection worth it in my opinion!

New Screens from Downpour Come to the Surface

Posted By: Whitney   August 17th, 2011 | 10:39 am

With Gamescom starting we are treated to some new Downpour screens from Konami! We see Murphy traversing some new areas including a water logged prison (maybe Toluca? That would be awesome) and meeting Sazh Katzroy from Final Fantasy 13 hehe I kid. I don’t know his name just yet but it’s cool to see a new face! Though now that I think about it you guys think it’s the same person we saw flashed on the tv in the e3 2010 trailer?
