P.T. Concept (Tokyo Game Show 2014) Video, Screens, and Thoughts

During the Konami showcase event at Tokyo Game Show 2014 we were treated to a a P.T. video concept showing a walk through another terror filled hallway. A lot of disturbing imagery was packed into such a short teaser and it’s definitely got the fanbase excited!

To tell you guys the truth I’m not quite sure how I feel about this little video. On one hand it had it has some disturbing visuals very in-line with what we’ve come to expect from Silent Hill a school shrouded in darkness and everything going to hell within a mere seconds. There was definitely a lot of WTF moments too like centipedes busting out of the walls and bodies and a door slamming into a wall and forming a new exit. Completely bizarre occurences but fits right at home within a title like Silent Hill. Additionally the graphics in the concept were stellar, I especially looooved the lighting when the tiny toys were whirling on the ground… who would have thought such the cheery rainbow colors could come off so sinisterly?

There was definitely a lot I liked within so why am I unsure how I feel about this video? Ultimately I think it was the pace of the presentation. With everything popping out like a haunted house everything was too in your face. Now I don’t think Silent Hills will be some action fest or haunted house considering the excellent buildup to the disturbing bits in P.T. I think what happened here was that they wanted to show off all their cool ideas in such a short time frame. Additionally I found some of the scares to be a bit overt like something I would associate more with a Resident Evil title. A large creature suddenly appearing and chasing you down a hall after sucking/biting a head off a naked body didn’t leave much to the imagination…and the use of centipedes, while disturbing, unfortunately brought to mind the viral mutations of seen in Resident Evil 5 when tentacles often started sprouting.

yikes

Again, this is only a concept so I’m not really worried right now even with my little gripes. I was really impressed with the imagery and pacing of P.T. so this short little concept hasn’t made my excitement wane much!

Additionally Gamespot reports that Kojima stated during the event that the team was looking at how television seasons were scheduled and considering a similar format for the game. Could this mean Silent Hills could be released in an episodic format like Telltale’s The Walking Dead? It could be pretty interesting if each episode was it’s own little story (like the Twilight Zone!) and would be a great way to tie into the whole multiple “Silent Hills”. Personally, I wouldn’t want one large story broken up but given that the game is still in development and episodes are only a consideration at this point I’m not going to worry right now!

Even though this latest video didn’t knock my socks off I’m super excited to see more of what Kojima and Co have in mind for Silent Hills! 😀

What about you guys, what did you think of the concept video? Did you get Resident Evil vibes from some of the imagery and the pacing too? What do you think of the idea of an episodic Silent Hills?

I absolutely love the idea of an episodic tale, as long as I don’t have to wait a month in between each! I’m sure they’d put it all on one disc. 🙂

The idea of the game being comprised of episodes or individual events does help me toward accepting the name “Silent Hills”. It’s been driving me nuts that it’s plural. This would explain that.

  2. I like the techniques a person provide with your content articles. I most certainly will bookmark your blog post plus consider all over again here often. I’m reasonably ‘ will be taught a lot of brand new products proper below! Have fun for!

    Interesting…
I had the same feeling like you when I saw the video. Well, I never played Resident Evil, but my thoughts were that this kind of scenery doesn’t fit into a Silent Hill game. It’s kind of similar to Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem.
I saw walkthroughs of P.T and I was impressed. Because the “old” Silent Hill atmosphere was there. An important point here I think is that P.T follows the “old” Silent Hill rules making the people feel their “core emotions”: sexuality (for example the woman’s moaning) and death (again the woman’s moaning) (said in Making of Silent Hill 2, Takayoshi Sato – character designer and CGI director of Silent Hill and Silent Hill 2).

I am blown away by this. I have complete trust in Guillermo Del Torro. I do agree with some of what you say, but this is meant to be a showcase. Just a concept video as they get a feel for it. I would already play this game. More than once. Hope they release it for PC.

I didn’t play the PT (don’t have a PS3-4), but I’ve seen some full playthroughs, and of course the final cutscene like 10 times.

I really don’t like it. It may be very scary, but I definitely don’t see much of Silent Hill there. Yes, there are some similarities, but sadly differences are the most. For instance, I don’t see how a popular actor like Norman Reedus as a protagonist could make Silent Hill mysterious and eerie at all. In addition, in the final cutscene we see the fog, so it could be the town of Silent Hill, but there’s light in the streets. I mean, the town is supposed to be abandoned, no lamppost could be on. Electricity is only present in selected spots of Silent Hill… Just details that I don’t like. I have faith in Hideo and Guillermo, if they can’t make a decent SH nobody can, but I hope they take the right path.

The same with this video, which I must clarify it’s just a concept movie, or pitch video, or teaser trailer for the PT itself. As stated, I hope they have nothing to do with the final game. Silent Hill isn’t about scares. Silent Hill is about occultism and some other themes that not many games can manage properly.

Silent Hill (1999) is my favorite videogame of all time, SH2 and SH3 following closely. I’ve been playing them over and over, searching, investigating, thinking about them and all the symbolism, mythology, meaning… So I should see if Silent Hills is a true SH videogame or not when it’s released. I hope at least some rules aren’t broken or changed…

    Best regards,
