Anyone else think that the film may have been rushed to meet the Halloween deadline? Since Saw isn’t really around anymore, people still want to see horror films around this time of the year. Well, horror themed, at least.

When I saw the first Silent Hill film I left feeling satisfied, but after watching it again when it was released on DVD I saw some glaring mistakes that became more apparent to me. I did let my fanatic wool cover my eyes a bit, but this film sounds like it took a completely different approach, which makes sense why you could enjoy it for what it is.

I haven’t seen the film, but I totally get CJ’s point about them perhaps not taking the best approach, though. Hate to be “that guy”. but if you’re going to tell a story about SH it has to be what makes it Silent Hill – not just throwing Pyramid Head and everything into a blender and opening the lid towards the screen.

Think about it like this; you know how some fans say “think of SH4 or Homecoming as their own games and not actually Silent Hill and they’re not so bad”? Would something like that work for this film?

I might still go see the film (it calls to me~), but gosh, I was really hoping they would at least try to step up from the first film.

    Good show, peeps!

Really long but enjoyable podcast! I think I never listened to a 3 and a half hour podcast before, but it was seriously fun to listen to your thoughts about the movie.

Still, I really don’t like the movie. But I’m happy some of you enjoyed it. 🙂

CJ, high-five. I have the exact same perception of the movie you have, haha.

  3. Alice says:

Awesome Podcast! I heard it days after it released, buy hey! At least I heard it! 😀
I really liked the way you guys told all of the movie!! It was very entertaining to hear your thoughts!
Also, yeah I meant to say – Why did Leonard had the other part of the Seal on his body? – I’m terrible at explaining myself :S

I was talking about a School Bus scene with a girl named “Courtney”, who told Heather how Silent Hill was so strange, and also offered Hetaher M&M’s, but didn’t allow her to take the yellow ones.

For the rest of the Podcast, I totally agree with all of you, especially with Sarah, because I really liked the Mannequin Scene and the PH vs. Claudia scene (although this last one was over the top, as you said, but still, very enjoyable :D).
Thanks for these awesome podcast you always make, Whitney!! I TRULY enjoy listening to them 🙂

OH,and also, thanks for telling me all of that information about the Missionary/Claudia 😀 Very interesting!
I read a part of it somewhere, if I remeber right, it was a very complete SH site that my brother showed me not so long ago…wish I only remembered which one it was…GOSH, can’t remember!!! D:
    Anyway, THANK YOU, whitney!!! 😀

@matty: Michael bassett said in his Blog that the movie was finished long ago. http://michaeljbassett.wordpress.com/2012/02/02/update-2nd-feb-2012/

Awesome podcasts. Thanks. The length wasn’t a problem as I Mp3splt the file into 15-minute chunks, listened parts of it at home, and finished the rest in my car. I enjoyed both the Universal Horror Nights and the movie podcasts, every bit of them. I then went to see the movie again, particularly paying attention to what you guys mentioned in the podcast.

To my surprise, the movie was more enjoyable the second time. It seemed less rush. There seemed to be more down time between each monster encountered than I could sense the first time I watched the movie. The fight between pyramid head and the missionary seems to be less stupid once I know that pyramid head is the hero that saved Heather. I’m now more satisfied with the ending although I’d prefer the one in which Claudia eats the fetus. I knew it wasn’t gonna happen because Heather wasn’t even wearing a pendant in the movie. Yet the final dialog between Claudia and Heather was definitely the best one in the movie.

Just stumbled on this podcast and i loved it! Fired through the previous episodes and can’t wait to hear the next!

Regarding the Rose scene, here’s my thought. I think it was filmed. The elevator she’s in is clearly the one from right after the scene with Dahlia, when Heather runs into the building, there’s an elevator just before the table with the birthday cake. In the final movie the elevator doors open and close when Heather walks past them which makes her jump. So i’m pretty sure in that scene they were supposed to open to reveal Rose, and perhaps Rose would have gone with her into the mannequin storeroom/factory/whatever it was and maybe gotten captured by the spider trying to save her? I think that’s why Suki and the other girl feel so out of place, because they weren’t meant to be there anyway.

@Alice – I know the scene you mean, SilentHaven posted about it. They talked to the actress playing her (Cassie Owoc). I guess it was supposed to be when she got on the school bus to go to school instead of after school like she says in the interview – http://silenthaven.tumblr.com/post/27352192968/it-wasnt-a-big-role-by-any-means-just-a-random-2

Great podcast, really enjoyed hearing your guy’s thoughts on the movie. I liked a lot of the references to the games although the movie was not all too great.

I don’t know if you noticed because it wasn’t mentioned but I did like the nod to the first game where the reason Heather runs in the direction of the church is because she hears the bells ringing and then meets Dahlia (dressed in a lot more similar clothes to the game than the first) which is obviously a nod to how Harry meets her in the game, I thought that was a nice touch and I completely agree that hers was probably the best cameo even though it was pointless.

I do just want to ask you though, and i could be wrong here but when Heather enters the warehouse building and passes the table with the birthday cake, next to the birthday cake and again i could be wrong but there appeared to be a plate with the cooked dog obviously like the 3rd game. It was a lot smaller than the game and the camera never really focuses on it so i’m not sure but if it is I like that they added it. Did you guys notice?

  9. Whitney says:

@Matty – Glad you enjoyed the show! If you do see the movie you will have to let me know what you thought 🙂 To answer your question no the film was not rushed to meet the Halloween deadline. MJB mentioned the film was complete back in January.

@Trystan – Thank you! I’m glad you liked it even though it was terribly long. I’m sorry you didn’t enjoy the movie 🙁

@Alice – Yay! Glad you enjoyed! Hmm I never heard of the bus scene, maybe it will be included in deleted scene when the film is released on dvd/bluray? As for Leonard having the other part of the seal in his body I just assumed that because Rose stole one half he figured the safest place for the other was in his own body.

@Issac – Yay I’m to read that so many of you guys didn’t think the length was a problem, I was really worried. I’m also happy you found the movie more enjoyable a second time around! I’m really hoping this will be the case for Cj hehe but I won’t hold my breath!

@Rewark – Oh AWESOME! How did you hear of my podcast? Thanks so much for checking it out and listening to past episodes! I could see the missing scene being in the office building but I was hoping it would appear in the hospital given that’s what Rose looked like during the hospital scenes in the 2006 movie.

Thanks for the Silent Haven link btw I will have to check it out 🙂

@Paul – The is a good reference to the first game! I’m surprised I didn’t notice that myself given SH1 is my favorite!

I did not notice a cooked dog in the office building but if I see the movie in theaters again I will definitely keep an eye out and let you know. That would be an awesome nod to SH3!

  10. rewak says:

@Whitney – I found the website around the beginning of the year when i was looking for the latest news on Downpour and saw your and CJ’s demo and i do remember listening to the interview you two did with Tom but for some reason i thought it was a one off thing, i didn’t realize there were more! Then i zoned out of the SH world a bit to keep spoiler free for the movie and after i saw it i checked here again and saw your podcasts up for the movie and the Horror Nights maze and ate them up! I’ll definitely check out forthcoming shows!

Oh and i immediately though the same when i saw the Rose photo, especially because it kinda mirrored the shot from the first movie from the hospital, but ah well. As for the movie as a whole, i kinda agree with Sarah, as a b-movie SH it kinda works, but i wasn’t expecting a b-movie so i was disappointed and i do worry for the future of the movie side of the franchise. I think there’s a lot of potential in the movies, they just need to take a little risk and do something that requires thought like CJ said.

  11. ChocolateRob says:

I think you missed a reference to Origins. I’m pretty sure that when Pyramid Head was cutting off arms in the asylum he was wielding the massive cleaver that the Butcher/protopyramidhead used in that game.
