Konami reveals new Silent Hill game

Konami’s working with a new developer on a new Silent Hill game for “next-gen consoles”, aka PS3 and Xbox 360.

The publisher revealed the news at an event in Frankfurt, Germany yesterday – dutifully attended by Eurogamer Germany.

No other details were given.

Silent Hill: Homecoming was Konami’s last original take on the IP and was released in autumn 2008 to a lukewarm reception. Better received was Silent Hill: Shattered Memories on Wii, a re-imagining of the first Silent Hill game from 1999.

Shattered Memories received a whopping 9/10 here on Eurogamer but sadly hasn’t appealed to the Wii audience in quite the same way.

A little more light is shed by joystiq and 1up. A Silent Hill 2 remake? Who knows but I know I’m looking forward to E3….I just might have another SH series info to add to this website 🙂

New Silent Hill shown, details to become less foggy at E3

Konami’s Gamers Night 2010 presentation concluded with a nice surprise: A teaser trailer for what could only be a new Silent Hill game. Well, maybe not entirely new.

In the footage, which appeared to be an in-engine recording of gameplay from one or both of the current HD consoles, a male character resembling James Sunderland from Silent Hill 2 awoke from a public bench and began wandering the foggy, deserted streets of a suburban neighborhood. While the game’s title was not revealed, given the recent revisiting of the original Silent Hill in Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, a remake of the second game in the series doesn’t seem too far-fetched.

The teaser ended with the tagline: “End the Silence” and “E3.” We suspect the weather report for Los Angeles in the third week of June will call for sunny with a chance of terrifying fog.

Konami Announces the Next Silent Hill
Another new developer is set to work Konami’s storied horror franchise.

At Konami’s press event last night in San Francisco, the company closed the show with a brief glimpse at the next Silent Hill game. The short trailer was light on specifics: a blonde man sits on the edge of a bed holding his head in his hands. The world around him morphs into a dark, deserted road in front of a dilapidated gate. The man hears a sound, turns, sees nothing, then gets attacked by something from the darkness when he turns back.

Will it be another retelling a la the divisive Shattered Memories? An entirely new entry in the series? At this point we don’t even have an official title, so it’s all conjecture.

However, we do know the game is being developed by Vatra Games, the same company behind the upcoming Rush ‘N Attack. While the trailer itself was devoid of any concrete details beyond “more to come at E3,” the developer’s website details the company’s focus on “high-end action titles for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC,” so it’s safe to assume that the next Silent Hill will probably not be for Wii or one of the handheld platforms. And, well, there definitely won’t be any music from long time series composer, Akira Yamaoka, but you already knew that.

Technically this is not the formal announcement of the next installment in the Silent Hill series. That will come in mind-June during E3 2010. I would reckon this title has been in planning stages/development since Q4 2009.

  2. Whitney says:

Yep! I’m definitely looking forward to hearing more during e3 🙂 I’m so glad the franchise is continuing!

  3. Brandon says:

Konami’s Gamers’ Day… so they recommenced with this event? They have not had the event the past couple years and even before that, they totally bombed the events. Regardless, I am pumped!

Also, I guess this does qualify as the formal announcement after the follow-up news from 1UP and Joystiq. During Konami’s Gamers’ Day 2007, Konami did not reveal their own news until the following week, so word directly from them should theoretically follow before long.

  4. Whitney says:

Looking forward to it! I just hope it will be better than the last sh xbox 360 game…

…come on SH fans. The revealing of a new Silent Hill game does not happen every day. Make some noise!

    What’s known thus far:

    – Unofficially referenced as Silent Hill 6
    – In development since 2009 by Vatra Games out of the Czech Republic
    – Jointly revealed by the American and European divisions of Konami Digital Entertainment on Friday
    – To be released on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3; PC version speculated
    – Very likely not seeing involvement from Akira Yamaoka or Hiroyuki Owaku
    – A Konami Gamers’ Day (Friday’s American event) video highlighted a character resembling James Sunderland possibly hinting a Silent Hill 2 remake

  6. Jon says:

I just saw an article about this and was about to email you it, but you already found out.

Very exiting, I wonder if it will make use of Natal or Move. I’ll be looking forward to E3 even more now.

  7. Brandon says:

I am not sure the development kits for either the Xbox Natal or PS3 Move have been made available to non-Microsoft or non-Sony development companies. If the aim is to capitalize on motion controlling, I say stick with the Wii, but I doubt as much for this upcoming Silent Hill title.

  8. Cool news, but I think everyone saw this coming right? I expected to hear more about a Climax involvement though… I definitely don’t like the SH2 remake possibility. No Yamaoka involvement doesn’t also sound like good news. But I won’t get pessimistic or whatever from now. I’ll wait for some more light to be shed onto this one. But in a more general view it’s awesome to have a next Sh in the works. Oh, also I kinda like it’s for the next gen consoles and I agree with Brandon’s last comment about the motion thingy. Graphics/visuals/working on new story or remaking a decent one looks like a most immediate target rather than Natal or whatever. Waiting for more details. 🙂
