PSP Version of Silent Hill: Shattered Memories
Posted By: Whitney January 28th, 2010 | 2:11 pmOkay I played a bit of the PSP version last night and I got it say it look like much more effort was put into this over the PS2. The controls are pretty much like the PS2 version but I did notice whenever I took out the camera phone I could only move it side to side and zoom in.
As for the graphics there were items missing from several areas but overall it looked more polished than the ps2 version. I wish I could take screens but I have an older PSP and I can’t take recordings from it 🙁 But here are some things that jumped out at me in comparison to the PS2 version:
– in the PSP version a lot of the ice was translucent…meaning we could clearly see the monsters in the alley which wasn’t the case with the PS2 version.
– More details in the environments. Items were removed but the items that stayed had added details. I’m not sure if the smaller screen had something to do with it but overall the graphics looked richer on the PSP. For example in Theresa’s with the red prom dress their were more details on the mannequin and a drawing of a red dress was added to “Formal dress, Good as new, worn once” poster. So even though the details in the actual dress were about the same as the PS2 version the total environment looked fuller.
– When I colored the happy family I noticed the pencils in the PSP version were on the right instead of the left.
– There was snow falling outside the windows while riding in Cybil’s car.
To me it looks like the PS2 is a port of the PSP version…which just seems bizarre… you think it would be the other way around. It’s like Climax decided to make the PS2 version at the last minute and weren’t able to add quite as much polish.
So in my opinion if you are going to play SH:SM:
Wii > PSP > PS2
I totally agree with your last lines, Whitney… It was obvious that they had left the PS2 version aside from the beginning – there weren’t even screenshots and previews for a long time and even now there are hardly any… All this just confirms that opinion. But I doubt they made it in the last minute since they said they had separate teams working on each version and not one on all so that they could possibly have the excuse that it was too much work… But it would still be weird since they had it planned from the beginning and not in the last month. So it’s that, either that part of the team didn’t really work hard or they didn’t care for it as a whole and looked at it only as a marketshare addition… I can’t recall how many times I considered not buying the game ’cause I felt and still feel disrespected as a customer who’d buy the PS2 version and fooled and fed up with all the date changes. The game is good but this just sucks. That doesn’t look like equal possibilities. And it doesn’t even make sense! …Duh. Sorry, but that’s how I feel.
I’d rather see the PS2 version delayed even 2 or 3 months or more and be properly made [since it’s been messed up already anyway], rather than get a half-polished product…
I totally agree POS666…I feel really bad for the people who waited for the PS2 version only to get such a sub par product visually. At least they can experience the same story and variations though so the best bits are still there!
Yeah, I guess… 🙁 I’ll probably still enjoy it as a whole but it’s just unfair. But I’m glad I can play it on the emulator. 🙂 Phew… Something tells me that playing the Wii version on the PC is better. 😛 Anywayz, PS2 for different feel and atmosphere and PC mainly for graphics fix. xD
I played PSP version and I know, that You can move the camera up and down ;] Just hold the R button
Oooh haha thanks! I’m going to have to try that now 🙂
