My first impressions! [updated: hey I’m not a complete wii-tard anymore!]
Posted By: Whitney December 3rd, 2009 | 9:36 pmOkay! played a little. It looks really nice, the voice acting is great in my opinion…I just got to get use to the controls. This is really my first time using a wii more then 2 seconds and I’m quite the “wii-tard.” I’m still trying to get through the first otherworld bit- but so far I’m liking it a lot despite my controlling problems! I’m a little thankful I got this a bit early so I have a chance to hone my wii skillz. Hopefully I’ll get over this learning curve quickly (like I did with the weird new controls for RE5) and search and run like a pro.
You want an idea on how bad I am? IT TOOK ME FOREVER TO GET THE FRIGGIN KEY OUT OF THE CAN. Seriously, I don’t know what I was doing but I had the hardest time turning the can upside down…those walkthroughs made it look so easy! I really suck using the wii-mote!
BTW as a new wii user the pop up hints were very useful. I barely know all the buttons and I wouldn’t of known what the heck to do when monsters started grabbing me.
Now I just got to figure out which hand to hold the flashlight in! I’m a lefty and I keep switching…”do I want the light in my dominate hand or the running controls?” Good thing I grew up with a bunch of rightys so I’m used to doing a lot of things with my right hand!
I assume once I find my flow this will all be easier (probably won’t die every few seconds!) but hey I AM HAVING FUN ON A WII despite my wii-tardness…. THIS IS AMAZING (cause I loathed the wii for this very reason before).
Okay off to try to make it to Levin Street again 🙂
[update 12/04/2009 12:30am]
Hey guys I wanted to let you know that the tips for wii playing REALLY helped! I’m making great progress now and Harry isn’t flailing around quite as much 🙂 I’m still a little wii-tarded but not as horrible as last night! So I just wanted to say thanks 🙂
I’m still dying a lot in the nightmare world because I get lost and the monsters eventually wear Harry down. I haven’t gotten the hang of using the wayward point on my phone so at the moment I’m just RUNNING, RUNNING, RUNNING oh that’s new! *die* repeat.
BTW those blue outlines definitely do not lead you to “safety” like a lot of fans assumed. The last nightmare sequence I went through I ended up going in a big fat circle! Harry kept getting turned around and I found myself back at the start a couple times!
You sound less than enthused.
Question: Can you turn off the on-screen button aids? I believe you that it is useful, but it totally weaknesses the Silent Hill experience. KCET understood this simple concept.
Less than enthused? Yep that’s exactly how I feel, I’m glad you could see through all my “I’m loving it, it’s great” bullshit IT’s totally THE WORST GAME EVA! 😛
There’s an option to turn off the “tutorials”. I went back and opened an old profile that was still in the first nightmare world. With the tutorials turned off I didn’t get the monster motion help but things like “A” still popped up when I ran to a door but it wasn’t like in my face or anything. Not sure if the arrows go away pointing out things you can interact with, I’ll play a bit with it off tomorrow and see if I noticed any on screen markers missing.
How can it be difficult to turn your wiimote upside down 😛
It couldn’t help but laugh with that, sorry Whitney
I was having trouble keeping the cursor on the screen so whenever I turned the wii-mote over the cursor went off screen and Harry dropped the can! It was pretty pathetic! LOL too bad I didn’t have video I would of totally posted it for the lulz of my wii-tardness. 🙂
Hi Whitney, a stupid question: there are subtitles? I’ve preorder the game and a game without subtitles sould be too bad for me 😀
Yes there are subtitles for everything! Also if you don’t want the sound coming from the wii-mote you can have it all come the tv too!
Whitney, try holding the Wiimote and Nunchuck closer to your body as you play. It can help keep your hands steady as you learn the maneuvers.
Use your wrist to control the ‘aim’. When I was first learning my way around the Wii I found that I was putting too much ‘arm’ into my movements and that resulted in exaggerated reactions on screen.
What do you mean by “old profile”? As in, one you were messing around with earlier, or one that was already there?
@ Plaguedguy : I will definitely try that tonight! I figured I was doing something wrong! Thanks for the tip 🙂
@ Yuki: I was so terrible at running and going through doors in the first nightmare encounter (I kept dying!) that I started the game over with a new profile. I wanted to practice by running through the the town at the start more before getting chased by monsters. Every time you save you saved over your previous save file (like in Grand Theft Auto 4) so the only way to save at different points in the game is to have separate profiles.
What’s funny is I ended up meeting “nice” Cybil my second time through instead of the barkeep. Maybe being a little less “drunk looking” with the wii mote helped a bit 😉
Hey Whit,
Glad you’re enjoying your game 🙂
Re: the controls. Remember to aim/move the wiimote relative to the sensor bar *NOT* the television screen (or put the sensor bar on top of the TV so they are one and the same).
When we’ve played in the past, that’s usually why your aim is so horrific 😉
– Sarah
So you got the barkeep the first time and nice Cybil the second profile, did you answer the questions the same on the form?
I would play around the with the Sensor bar if you keep having trouble, make sure it’s not at and an angle or it’s view partially blocked. I’ve often had to adjust it because it was acting weird.
@Sarah will try! Though it is on top of my tv maybe I’m not far enough back?
@Jon Now that I think about it… my second time through I did say “having a drink helps me relax” instead of “no” so that could of triggered the change. I’m not paying that close attention at the moment on what’s making the changes for my first playthrough but I plan on documenting what effects what later on 🙂 Hopefully others can help me with that!
HEY! I’m about to play it! My mom rented it!! (They had it early, WHY?)
I’ll give my review <333
@ WolfSiberia
Whoa! Where on earth did your mom find a place that’s already renting it?! Very nice!
@ Wolf
Yeah, I mean wtf? Where/Who’s renting it? Nice to have a second opinion though… 😛
Whitney I hope you get over the controls thing fast. 🙂 It’s a bit funny actually (in a good way :)). I think that if I died a lot and couldn’t control the damn thing I would be swearing all day! xD And maybe my Wii soon wouldn’t exist. 😀 (Maybe in a trash can in pieces or On the train’s railroad [With the train on top of it! xDD] or I would end up not playing for days ’till I calmed down! Maybe… :D]
Anywayz, it’s nice you;re enjoying it. Waiting for some more details.
Also, [I’m asking again] did you figure out how you’ll record it?
Hey guys I wanted to let you know that the tips for wii playing REALLY helped! I’m making great progress now and Harry isn’t flailing around quite as much 🙂 I’m still a little wii-tarded but not as horrible as last night!
@ Pieceofsheet: No not yet, I will worry about recording after I’ve finished my initial playthrough 🙂
Oh man, incredibly jealous Whitney! I’m dying to play!
Frankly I’m sure it’ll take me more than the 6 hours projected by IGN to finish it, because I have a tendency to stare at every nook and cranny in games where you can explore, especially Silent Hill games.
I got to the hospital, then my data corrupted o_o;
That sucks 🙁 How did it get corrupted?? (BTW I just went through the nightmare area at the school)
WolfSiberia, elaborate on the problem. And where did you rent it, if you legitimately did?
Holy moly I can’t believe I beat it!
Awesome!
Quick question: can you take off the triangles on the items?
@JCR I don’t think so but I was playing with the hints turned on. For my next playthrough I plan to turn it off so I’ll let you know if I notice any missing arrows
Thanks Whitney 🙂
Man, I can’t wait till Monday!
