New blog post by Tomm discusses what one should expect while playing Silent Hill: Shattered Memories…I bet this is in response to all the critics upset to find that Climax wasn’t lying…it isn’t a straight remake.

I’m not sure why so many critics claim there’s nothing like the original Silent Hill there are A LOT of parallels and it’s not just the names.

Harry basically takes basically the SAME JOURNEY THROUGH SILENT HILL in both games. Really! SHSM might have some extra areas and some things are out of order…but it’s still pretty close to the original trek.
- Both: Car Crash
- Both: Alley with a “dead dog” (except in SHSM it’s graffiti!)
- Both: Diner meets Cybil (could or could not happen in SHSM) finds a device that alerts Harry to monsters. In the original it’s a radio that gives off static, in SHSM he realizes he has a cell phone that gives off interference around monsters and other paranormal things.
- Both: Needs to travel down Levin Street to get to a particular house…I think they even share the same house number..though in SHSM Harry doesn’t make it inside.
- Original: Harry enters Midwich elementary looking for his daughter…has to solve a piano puzzle involving some birds.
SHSM: After going through the some creepy woods where does Harry end up…you guessed it a school called MIDWICH…sure it’s a high school but he’s still looking for Cheryl there! You even have the opportunity solve another bird related puzzle in there.
- Original: Harry meets Dahlia at Balkan Church who’s mysterious seems to have more information about Cheryl…
SHSM: hey look Harry meets Dahlia at a nighclub called “The Balkan” she knows where to find Cheryl…and knows more than she’s telling.
- Original: Harry has to lower a drawbridge to cross into the next section of town and uses a key left by Dahlia back in Balkan Church.
SHSM: On the way to locate Cheryl in Dahlia’s transportation Harry must lower a drawbridge after urging from Dahlia.
- Original: After crossing the bridge goes to Alchemilla Hospital and meets a pretty nurse named Lisa.
SHSM: Ends up in Alchemilla Hospital after trying to cross the drawbridge meets a pretty nurse named Lisa.
- Original: Harry travels down Simmons street and visits the Green Lion Antique shop and finds a big surprise.. the “other church.” Then takes a stroll downtown and takes in the the sights at the Silent Hill Towncenter (a mall) and…sees a creepy movie with Cheryl play.
SH:SM: Harry is in downtown Silent Hill? He travels through a malll? And he sees a creepy video featuring Cheryl wow… Harry makes it to Simmons street, the “Green Lion Pawn shop” and finds where Cheryl currently lives and a big surprise.
- Original: Harry bored of the mall travels through the sewer to reach the Silent Hill Resort Area, could save a side character from a monster in Annie’s Bar, has a powwow with Cybil and Dahlia on a boat, goes to lighthouse, some more sewer trekking, arrives at Lakeside amusement park….and then Nowhere.
SHSM: Harry goes through a “Nowhere”-like nightmare world. Makes a trek through some sewers to reach the Lakeside (resort) area of town. Meets up with a side character in Annie’s Bar, visits Lakeside Amusement Park, has a powwow with Dahlia on a boat and has another conversation with Cybil a little later, makes it to the Lighthouse in search for Cheryl.
- Original: Finds Cheryl
SHSM: Finds Cheryl
Looks like there’s a lot of similarities between the journey in both games…SHSM is definitely a re-imagining and it’s not only with some old characters and some new looks.
I definitely plan to go in more detail on the site once I’m done with all my playthroughs 🙂
Awesome blog Whitney! Those comparisons are awesome! And I’m glad Tomm posted that up too. Everyone needs to take a chill pill and realize the beauty in this game.
I’m not sure why so many critics claim there’s nothing like the original Silent Hill there are A LOT of parallels and it’s not just the names.
That can be said for EVERY Silent Hill game.
@ JCR : Thanks 🙂
@ Brandon: But the other games can’t claim to make the same journey through the town. James, Heather, Henry, Travis, and Alex do not follow the same path as Harry Mason. Sure, similar areas are visited but the way each of their stories progress are no where as close to Harry’s in SHSM.
This is my point. A lot of critics claimed this reimaging holds little connection to the original besides a couple of characters. I believe they are not giving it enough credit and don’t see just how similar both games are. In the end SHSM Harry progression through Silent Hill pretty much followed the original’s path through the town.
I didn’t read it ’cause it is spoilerific, but I feel bad he had to post this. 🙁 But, I don’t care if it has things in common with the first SH and the rest or not. From the bit I’ve played, it looks like a very good game, maybe not that Silent-Hillish, but still close and with good elements.
me too 🙁 it’s a GREAT GAME
