Throughout the game Harry will come across 25 objects that are significant in some way to his journey through Silent Hill. Collecting these mementos isn’t necessary but how many you find has an effect on the game’s ending.
Below I’ve listen where you can find each memento and have included my own thoughts on their possible meanings and connections to Cheryl.
Memento #1 – A Winter Beacon:
Location: Diner 52, in a lower cupboard behind the counter near the back of the restaurant Tavern: front door and check the dartboard to the right.
Description: A snow globe showing a scene with a lighthouse and a girl in a red dress. Other Markings: Has a $9.93 price tag and a gold foil sticker on the bottom. The gold sticker has Psalm 104:2 “Covering Himself with light as with a cloak. Stretching out the heavens as a curtain” written on it. |
||
Connection to Cheryl : Psalm 104 is “a hymn praising God who easily and skillfully made rampaging waters and primordial night into a world vibrant with life.”(1) This line particular line continues to describe God’s overall splendor and astounding abilities. We see a girl standing by the lighthouse which is our first clue to Cheryl’s true where abouts (Lighthouse Clinic). I believe the Psalm written on the bottom is in reference to Cheryl’s creation of this frozen world within her head. |
Memento #2 – Hidden Fire:
Location: Inside Cybil’s police car, in the glove compartment.
Description: A pack of “Hemingway” (Ultra Lights) 14 class A cigarettes. Other Markings: None |
||
Connection to Cheryl : Illegally smoking was mention by Cheryl (The Problem Child) in echo message #19. Maybe this was her favorite brand? I’m guessing it represents her troubled youth.
What’s interesting about this pack is the brand name “Hemingway” when I did a google search I found that shortly after the UK’s ban on smoking in public places a British design company Tank put out a series of classic books designed to mimic cigarette packs – the same size, packaged in flip-top cartons with silver foil wrapping and sealed in cellophane. Their packaging of Ernest Hemingway’s The Snows of Kilimanjaro and The Undefeated apparently looked too much like Lucky Strike’s pack of cigarettes and Tank was sued by British American Tobacco over it. BTA believed that the public would think that they’ve they’ve endorsed or sponsored the Hemingway stories, “which can dilute the goodwill in the Lucky Strike brand.” Pretty crazy right? Maybe this was also a little inside regarding the BTA by the UK based Climax studios? Battle ahead for ‘cigarette pack’ books |
Memento #3 – Frozen Waters:
Location: The Woods at the base of the water tower inside the metal hatch.
Description: A small marble with blue swirls and rings. Other Markings: None |
||
Connection to Cheryl : It looks like a bit of ice the name makes me think it’s in reference to Cheryl’s frozen state of mind concerning her father’s death. |
Memento #4 – A Broken Ward:
Location: Orion Hunting lodge inside the drawer in the living room connected to the kitchen.
Description: A broken pink flashlight Other Markings: “Safety Flashlight” is written on the side. |
||
Connection to Cheryl : I believe the broken flashlight represents how her father’s guard and protection is now gone due to his death. Cheryl obviously feels unsafe in the world without her father hence her coping with the loss by pretending he’s out there searching for her. |
Memento #5 – A Moveable Feast
Location: Orion Hunting lodge inside the wall cabinet in the bedroom.
Description: A rusty hunting knife Other Markings: “All stories end in Death” is engraved in the handle. |
||
Connection to Cheryl : I believe that the name of this memento connects to Ernest Hemingway’s memoirs “A Moveable Feast” about his years in Paris. Hemingway worked on the manuscript for years before his suicide which I believe connects to the “All stories end in Death” engraved on the handle.
This memoir title was suggested by a friend of Hemingway stemming from a conversation the two had about Paris: “If you are lucky enough to have lived in Paris as a young man, then wherever you go for the rest of your life, it stays with you, for Paris is a moveable feast.” With that quote in mind and the rusty hunting knife I believe it’s referencing how Harry’s death has stayed with Cheryl over the years. I believe the knife probably originally belonged to her father who was known to enjoy fishing and his interests may have extended to hunting as well. |
Memento #6 – Pinned Beauty:
Location: Bryant Overlook, inside the trunk of the parked red car.
Description: A pinned and labeled butterfly Other Markings: Label says “Xerces Blue” which is an extinct species of butterfly from San Francisco, California. |
||
Connection to Cheryl : Harry mentions that Cheryl loved to collect pretty bugs, like butterflies, to Lisa Garland on walking her home. I believe that this specimen is from her collection and could represent how Cheryl felt trapped in the car with her boyfriends sexual advances. It’s also a nice nod to Alessa Gillespie from the original game who had a large collection of butteries in her bedroom. |
Memento #7 – Suffocated Forever:
Location: Inside the heart shaped jewelry box on the dresser by the second floor exit of the Cat House/Honey Trap Brothel.
Description: An insect (an ant?) trapped in amber. Other Markings: none |
||
Connection to Cheryl: Soon |
Memento #8 – My Plastic Perfect Girl:
Location: Inside the fridge/freezer in Wonderland Burger’s kitchen.
Description: A naked fashion doll in Pigtails. Other Markings: “Teenie” is written on its back |
||
Connection to Cheryl: Not really sure about this one. I’m guessing Cheryl had some sort of body issues? The doll’s nudity might also be a reference to her later sexual exploits with older men. I’m also thinking that maybe the “Pigtails” conversation we heard in echo message #10 was between Cheryl and a stepfather/mom’s new boyfriend and she’s conflicted on what makes a “perfect girl” – a woman’s body but young school girl’s hair? |
Memento #9 – Heavenly Protection
Location: Midwich High School in the wall cabinet in the storage room.
Description: A medallion with the image of Saint Christopher crossing a river with a child. Other Markings: “St. Christopher protect us” is engraved on the back side of the medallion. |
||
Connection to Cheryl: Christopher is the patron saint of travelers. Medallions like this are often displayed in automobiles so the driver and passengers are less likely to die in a car accident.
Harry died in a car accident so it’s no wonder why Cheryl owns this medallion. What’s interesting is if you look closely at the photo of Cheryl on the wall in the gym you can see her wearing the medallion.

Memento #10 – A Frigid Jewel:
Location: Midwich High School Biology Lab inside the frog.
Description: A gold ring with a blue/green gem Other Markings: “Ice Gem” is engraved on the inside of the band. |
||
Connection to Cheryl: This ring could represent Cheryl’s “frigid” behavior with one of her first boyfriends. |
