Deadly Premonition: The Director’s Cut Review

Deadly Premonition: The Director’s Cut is a Playstation 3 re-release of the polarizing 2010 Xbox 360 title that follows FBI Special Agent Francis York Morgan as he investigates a shocking small town murder. The original was released on both Xbox 360 and Playsation 3 in Japan but only the former was sold in other regions. Even with its limited release, a cult following developed over the years thanks to word-of-mouth advertising and high profile play-throughs. Thanks to the existence of this unexpectedly devoted fan base, Swery was presented with an opportunity to finally bring the title to Playstation 3 for regions other than Japan. This re-release not only gave Playstation 3 owners access to a previously exclusive title but also gave Swery an opportunity to address some of the issues that plagued the original release. The Director’s Cut promises an updated game play experience with revamped controls, new lighting and texture work, brand new cut scenes, and downloadable content to enhance your stay in the town. Being a huge fan of the original, there was no way I could pass up an opportunity to play the enhanced version of one of my all time favorite games so I’m sure it won’t come that much of a surprise that even with some unexpected technical hiccups I really enjoyed revisiting Greenvale in the Director’s Cut.

dp_contest_header

Greetings all, David Bruno, the North American public relations representative for Rising Star Games here. You may have already heard the news, but in the instance that you haven’t, last week we released Deadly Premonition: The Director’s Cut across North America. And to celebrate the game’s release we feel that a little fan appreciation is in order. After all, The Director’s Cut wouldn’t have been possible without you, the fans! So we want you to have a cup of coffee on us so to speak.

Starting today, Tuesday, May 7, through Tuesday, May 21 (that’s a whole two weeks) head to your favorite coffee shop, order your favorite drink, and tell the barista that your name is “York” when they asked for your name to write on the cup. I know, I know, this may be a bit difficult if you’re not paying with cash and happen to be using a credit/debit card: they’re gonna’ be all like “…but sir, your card clearly reads David Bruno on the front, and it’s even signed as such on the back.” This is where you get to be all super slick like and bust out the “Just call me York; that’s what everyone calls me” line. Awwwww yeah.

Once you pick up your tasty beverage here’s how to enter: snap a picture of the name “York” as appears written on the cup by the barista and tweet the following message:

@RisingStarGames @RedSeedsProfile Please, just call me York. That’s what everyone calls me. #DeadlyPremonition

Your entry should look somewhat similar to this:

IMPORTANT: Please be sure to follow us on Twitter so we can message you in the instance that you win one of the following prizes up for grabs.

Here is a full list of the prizes:

George Prize Level: 5 x $5 Starbucks giftcards – $50

Thomas Prize Level: 5 x pre-order DLC codes (of our choosing)

Emily Prize Level: 2 x PSN vouchers for Deadly Premonition: TDC

York Prize Level (grand prize): 1x Physical copy of Deadly Premonition: TDC, 1x pre-order DLC code, 1x $5 Starbucks giftcard

Here’s how we’ll pick the winners: After the two-week entry period ends on Tuesday, May 21 at 11:59PM PST, a drawing will be held at random to select the winners using http://www.random.org. You may enter once per cup, per person, per day…basically once a day. Please keep the pictures “safe for work.” I know how wild and crazy you kids can get. ;) Open to North Americia only

Now go get percolatin’, @DavidBruno

Deadly Premonition Director’s Cut- My Experience So Far

April 30th, 2013 | 10:38 am   By: Whitney

york

Deadly Premonition is out in North America!

I received my copy of Deadly Premonition Director’s Cut yesterday and was able to put a few hours into the game last night after work. I was pretty worried that the game wouldn’t run smoothly due to the reports of bugs by fans who purchased the PAL release last Friday but I’m happy to report that the NTSC version of the game is running smoothy for me so far.

That’s not to say the game doesn’t have issues but they are pretty minor compared to the Silent Hill HD Collection technical fiasco I was picturing in my head! Here’s some of my first impressions:

  • There’s tiny hiccups with the frame rate similar to the ones I saw while playing the Japanese Red Seeds Profile on PS3 over the weekend. Every once an while there’s a slight pause after I shoot enemy in head and the worst stuttering I’ve seen thus far has been restricted to the opening Woods Otherworld segment and replay. It’s not hindering my play through at all and I’ve barely notice it after the initial occurrence.
  • Enemies are way too easy. Probably not even necessary for people to go out and find the unlimited weapons. Two shots to the head with the 9mm Handgun FBI Custom and they are dead.
  • Sound issues I’ve experienced: I noticed echoing a few times briefly but it wasn’t constant. I remember York echoing outside the woods and I believe when he first met Polly. Music and voices are still unbalanced like in the Xbox release. I also noticed slight stuttering on the bg music in the Woods area especially if you have the game paused and some stuttering while talking to Polly.
  • Controls: Not as customizable as I thought. I tried to change the controls to the original ones found in Red Seeds Profile and the Xbox 360 Deadly Premonition and found it to be impossible. You can change what each of the buttons do but there’s no way to change which stick is used to aim nor can you customize the driving controls. Driving is improved handling wise as I find I don’t careen off road quite so much but the boost (L2) and brake (L1) positions on the controller is rather awkward. I really wish I could switch there positions so the brake is below the boost.

The 180 degree turn is also missing which is a little annoying but given how easily the enemies go down I find I’m using it less often to make quick attacks behind me while fighting a group.

BTW the text given in game for the darts controls are wrong, but once I figured out the correct aim, breath hold and shot buttons it was a breeze.

  • Really like that I don’t have the fast forward through the text dialogue and observations also the moveable camera really makes looking at the environments a lot more fun!
  • I can see a lot of graphical improvements over the original but not all the textures have been improved. There’s still a lot of blurry illegible things that haven’t been upgraded. For example, the side of the Sheriff patrol car and George’s note to York with the car master key are still very low resolution. However a lot of the building exteriors, the road, menus and items have received more details and polish though. I plan on showing some side by side comparisons soon.

I’m enjoy myself immensely so far and I’m not sure why the PAL version is running so poorly for other fans. I’m thinking I should try and import a copy to compare. I’m not sure if my experience has more to do with my PS3 being brand new (I have a system that came bundled with Assassin’s Creed 3) or that the NTSC is just less buggy.

BTW I haven’t been able to try any of the DLC because they are not in the PSN store as of last night.

Fans report DPDC is buggy and the EU digital release is delayed

April 27th, 2013 | 12:34 am   By: Whitney

So Deadly Premonition Director’s Cut officially released in Europe! Yay! I know I’m jealous because I won’t get my hands on the game until Tuesday, April 30th here in the US.

However, instead of the plethora of tweets and posts of excitement I expected on DPDC EU release day there’s been an increasing amount of discussion about how glitchy, and depending on who you talk to, unplayable the game is :(

Fans are reporting major frame rate drops while playing the opening chapter and driving around Greenvale along with varying audio problems, translation errors and even York killing glitches.

I have to say these reports are not only disappointing but also surprising given that the build I saw back in both January and March of this year at the two DPDC San Francisco press events I attended displayed no such issues! Unfortunately, since the Director’s Cut won’t be released in the US until next week I’m not sure if the problems reported are strictly limited to the PAL release or will plague the NTSC release as well. As soon as I get my hands on my own copy I will let you guys know of any issues I experience!

Additionally, I had several fans tell me last night that the day one European digital release has also been delayed until May 1st! However, according to a message Ill Saint received from the Playstation Store it hints that this release may be delayed even longer then originally reported due to technical issues

Our records show that you have pre-ordered ‘Deadly Premonition: Director’s Cut Preorder Pack’ from PlayStation®Store. We regret to inform you that due to technical issues, Deadly Premonition will miss its expected release date of 26th April. We are working hard to resolve these issues as quickly as possible. Unfortunately we are unable to provide a revised release date at this time. For the most up-to-date information please visit the product page, which can be found here:
https://store.sonyentertainmentnetwo…00000000000397

Be advised your pre-order has not been cancelled and as of 24/04/2013 your Sony Entertainment Network Wallet has not been charged. The charge date for your pre-order will be revised based on the new release date. If you require any assistance, please visit the PlayStation Support page which can be found here: http://eu.playstation.com/support/

Please accept our sincere apologies for any inconvenience caused.

The PlayStation®Store Team

Could this be due to the day one bugs fans have been reporting? I have my fingers crossed that maybe a patch is already be in the works.

Apparently the launch trailer for Deadly Premonition is up on the PS3 Homepage saying the game is out today XD. Ross was kind enough to take a few screens for me showing Emily’s sexy new outfit, the little girl from the new prologue, and what is possibly a new scene with York. I imagine I will be sent this trailer sometime next week for the UK release so look for more screens and the trailer itself on the site then!

[Update]

Hey you can view it on the UK playstation site! Thanks Gary!
