I was in the library today looking for something to read and picked up this random paperback novel called The Shadow Catchers and took it home, somewhat knowing it wasn't going to be very well written, but doing it anyway. You see, it's about a disgraced FBI Special Agent looking to run away from the travesty of his last case by moving to the small Nevada town of San Cristobal, where he gets involuntarily caught up in a murder case that may or may not have supernatural undertones. I was vaguely intrigued because I just took it off the shelf without really knowing what it was about, and it all seemed to fit in with my current interests... Then I got to the part where the FBI agent introduces himself:

"Yeager. Michael Francis Yeager."

I did a double take.

Michael Francis Yeager
Francis Yeager Michael
Francis Y M
Francis York Morgan

:grouch:

I checked the publication date and it said 2006, which is when DP was set, but doesn't really indicate anything except another of those weird coincidences. Anyway, this is totally irrelevant, but I thought it was kinda funny. SWERY, you're everywhere!!

Yeah, it's getting pretty... Well. Something terrible happened to Agent Yeager's mom that he doesn't want to talk about, I think the Shadow Catcher is a ghost/murderer/creature thing, and right now he's going with the Sheriff to do the autopsy.

It's really not at all like the game but it's close enough to be amusing.

I actually put a reserve on a copy of this book at my library. It'll be fun reading material while I'm backstage at Pericles.

Cool, you'll probably be the only other person I know who's heard of it. I just finished it last night...

***EXCRUCIATINGLY MILD SPOILERS***
Spoiler: show
Gotta say, the plot as a whole doesn't make a whole lot of sense and there actually isn't any supernatural stuff going on, but some of the dialogue is surprisingly pretty rocking for a throwaway pulp. It has a neat rhythm. Apparently the author's day job is being a playwright, so if nothing else, there's that.

There's two other books with the same characters so I might pick those up too.

...What's Pericles?

It's a play by William Shakespeare (one of his less well known plays) that a local theatre company is putting on at the moment. I'm... sort of a backstage jack-of-all-trades for it.

Ooh, nifty. I'll have to keep that in mind should I end up enjoying the first one.

Just finished The Shadow Catchers... It was definitely a fun read. I've put a reserve in on the other books. Well, I THINK they're the other books. They're by the same author, and they're the only ones in the system.

Wow, that was fast! Chillwater Cove and Broken Wing are the others in the trilogy I believe... I think the second one is about Peggy and the third is about Mike Yeager again. You'll probably finish 'em before I do, though.

:D I had over two hours of doing nothing during the matinee performance of Pericles today. So I got to sit in the green room and just read.

Now all I have to do is wait for the library to get in the other books. Which are indeed the correct books.

That's pretty cool.

Has anyone read 'American Psycho', the novel? Granted that the content has little to do with Deadly Premonition but the main character shares some similar traits regarding the way he narrates.

York's deadpan humour and obscure pop culture references always reminded me of Pat Bateman, the main character from that book...
