I've been on a Lynch kick recently and have begun to notice that the DP similarities don't stop at Twin Peaks. Again, nothing about the stories is similar, just some of the imagery and the way it's used thematically. I just finished Mulholland Drive yesterday and there was a scene with two women in tight dresses leading each other through the dark woods, and my friend leaned over and whispered "reminds me of you-know-what!" It didn't help that one of the actresses was Naomi Watts and that this particular movie was probably the one they based Emily's model from.

And of course there's the scene in Blue Velvet where
Spoiler: show
Jeffrey Beaumont is hiding in the closet, not from the Raincoat Killer, but from the far more insane Frank Booth.

Also reading some academic essays about Lynch and it's really creepy that even the highly formal criticism of Lynch can be applied just as, if not more easily to, Deadly Premonition. Has anyone seen Lynch's work other than TP?

I would have never thought to connect Blue Velvet to DP that way but it definitely makes sense. As far as David Lynch goes, I've only seen Eraserhead, Twin Peaks, Blue Velvet, Rabbits, and the beginning of Inland Empire. I do have enormous respect for him though.

Yeah, I think SWERY said on Twitter that his favorite Lynch movies were Dune and Blue Velvet, so there's actually a lot of thematic stuff from BV in DP as well. It's crazy because I was reading this super academic essay about the "primal scene" in BV, which is a Freudian concept having to do with

***possibly  subject matter***
Spoiler: show
a kid walking in on their parents having intercourse and misinterpreting it as an act of violence on the part of the father, and how that plays into their psychological development growing up. In formal criticism, this plays out in BV as Jeffrey witnessing Booth abusing Dorothy from inside the closet... But when I read that, I was like, holy crap! The Primal Scene fits DP so much better- little York walks in on a red tree growing out of his mother's abdomen, sees his dad pulling a gun on her, and reads it as his dad shooting his mom and then killing himself. If games were taken as seriously as movies I'm pretty sure the theorists would have a field day with DP... Not to mention all the Oedipal complexes.

I too only saw the beginning of Inland Empire! I gotta get back and watch the whole thing, but having it playing while at work is NOT A GOOD IDEA.

Yeah, I was a Flash animator. I'd usually have something on in another window while I roughed out frames and whatnot. I turned it off at the bit where women started taking off their tops on the off-chance that someone would glance at my screen and be all like :? :o

Twin Peaks is usually enough for most people. Honestly I have no idea what I'd think of his films if I hadn't watched TP first.

I also was on a huge Lynch bender for a while there. I watched all his major movies. As much as I wanted to like it Dune was pretty bad. Blue Velvet was my favorite and I still think his best work is in tv series since he is so good at characters and ambiguity both most important aspects of long running series.

BLUE Velvet is indeed a masterpiece.
Isabella Rossellini is Italian like me.
I'm sad that Italian Horror is in true CRISIS right now, we NEED some REAL director and some REAL Actor/ACTRESS of good level.

I missed this. How can you love 2 of his most prominent works and not like him? They are the reason I DO like him.

I just watched the first season of Twin Peaks. So many loose ends...I actually prefer Swery's interpretation, he really refined the story in my opinion.

I've got to watch the second season, but I gotta do that online.
